The Penedès wine region is seeing new developments in ancestral variety preservation. Jean Leon has launched Jean Leon Nativa Forcada, which is identified as the first sparkling wine in the world produced using the recovered Forcada grape variety. The production is limited to 11,000 bottles, and the wine is priced at a recommended 23 euros.

The use of Forcada, which was officially approved by DO Penedès in 2017, is part of a broader effort to utilize grapes that can withstand climate change. The variety is noted for its late ripening and ability to maintain acidity in warmer temperatures. This initiative follows a long-standing trend in the sector of recovering Catalan ancestral varieties to increase vineyard diversity.

Separately, Cellers Maset has introduced Mattiana 2022, a new black wine. It is crafted from 50-year-old organic Garnatxa vines located in Font-rubí. The wine has already received a gold medal and a score of 95 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
