Peneios River Delta: Protecting a vital Thessalian ecosystem

The Peneios River Delta, located where the Thessalian plain meets the Aegean Sea, is a significant wetland ecosystem characterized by diverse landscapes, including riparian vegetation, reed beds, and sandy areas. The delta forms a unique natural environment through the interaction of freshwater and saltwater, featuring small islands and varying habitats.

Part of the region is included in the European Natura 2000 network (GR1420015), providing a vital refuge for numerous protected bird species such as kingfishers, cormorants, bee-eaters, and various waterfowl. The landscape is framed by Mount Olympus and Mount Kissavos, with traditional fishing boats and huts adding to the local character.

Nikos Rigas, president of the Peneios Delta and Tempi Network, emphasized the importance of protecting and highlighting the area through collaboration with local villages and residents to preserve this rich natural environment.
