PENGASSAN adopts ICAN-style succession model to ensure smooth leadership transition

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has amended its constitution, approved in August 2025, to adopt a succession model modeled on the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). Under the new rule, the elected deputy president will automatically become the president at the end of the incumbent’s term, removing the need for a separate presidential contest.

President Festus Osifo announced the reform during a tribute ceremony for former president Francis Johnson, who died in office in May 2019 and whose passing highlighted the need for clearer succession procedures. The union expects the next transition to occur on 22 August 2026, citing reduced internal rivalry and greater institutional stability as the primary benefits of the change.
