Penguin India withdraws from Sonia Gandhi memoir publication

Penguin Random House India has withdrawn from publishing Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, ‘Belonging: A Story of Love’, following a breakdown in negotiations. While the publisher stated it is their prerogative to provide recommendations in the “best interests of their books,” reports suggest the impasse arose because Gandhi refused to implement suggested changes.

Critics and Congress leaders allege the requested edits aimed to remove content critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his administration’s handling of Chinese territorial encroachments in India. In contrast, the memoir is scheduled for international release on November 10 through Alfred A. Knopf, a sister firm of Penguin, which will publish the work unchanged.

The incident has reignited debates regarding censorship and publisher autonomy in India. Observers point to previous instances where Penguin and other publishers faced pressure from communal groups or government litigation, citing past cases involving authors such as Wendy Doniger and Perumal Murugan.
