Penguin Random House sues IMPI over book restrictions
Penguin Random House has filed a lawsuit against the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) following a resolution that the publisher describes as censorship. The dispute concerns the book ‘Todo a la luz’ by Karla de la Cuesta, which investigates the criminal case involving singer Gloria Trevi and Sergio Andrade.
In July 2026, IMPI issued a resolution requiring the publisher to remove Gloria Trevi’s name and image from the work and imposed a fine exceeding 500,000 pesos. The publisher argues that the book is a journalistic investigation based on judicial documents and public interest, and that the use of Trevi’s name and archival photographs is protected under freedom of expression.
The Federal Court of Administrative Justice (TFJA) has admitted the lawsuit and granted precautionary measures, suspending the IMPI resolution and allowing the book to remain on sale while the legal proceedings continue.
