Peniche authorities oppose proposed open-pit kaolin mine

Local authorities in Peniche and Óbidos have issued unfavorable opinions regarding the “Royal China Clay” mining concession project (C-185) in Serra d’el-Rei. The proposed open-pit mine, promoted by Motamineral – Minerais Industriais, S. A., would cover over 107 hectares and operate for approximately 20.5 years.

The Peniche City Council and the Serra d’el-Rei Parish Council have raised significant concerns regarding the environmental impact assessment. Officials argue the study contains critical inaccuracies, specifically regarding the proximity of residential areas to the mining site. For instance, the assessment placed the Casais de Mestre Mendo settlement four kilometers away, while actual distances are reported to be as close as 20 to 450 meters.

Opponents cite potential negative consequences for public health and the environment, including increased noise, dust, vibrations, and atmospheric emissions. Additionally, the project is expected to generate heavy traffic, with an estimated 11 to 12 heavy vehicles passing through the area every hour, which officials claim will damage the road network and degrade the quality of life for local residents.
