Peniche: 18‑year‑old detained after police chase for driving without licence

In the early hours of 28 July, police in Peniche, Portugal, stopped an 18‑year‑old female student who was driving without a legal licence. The driver accelerated to evade the patrol car, struck a speed‑reduction hump and damaged a wheel, forcing the vehicle to be immobilised.

The Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) detained the young driver at about 03:45, escorted her to the Tribunal de Peniche and applied a Term of Identity and Residence as a coercive measure. The police noted she has no known criminal record and reminded the public that driving without a licence is a crime that endangers road safety. PSP also reported that eight people have been detained for the same offence in its jurisdiction since the start of the year.
