While various treatments exist—including lifestyle changes, medications, injections, and vacuum devices—penile prostheses are considered for patients who do not respond sufficiently to these methods or seek a more permanent solution. Dr. Dilmen emphasized that the procedure is not suitable for everyone; medical decisions depend on factors such as age, general health, and comorbid conditions like diabetes or vascular diseases.

There are two primary types of prostheses: inflatable and malleable. Inflatable models utilize a pump placed in the scrotum to achieve erection, whereas malleable models allow the penis to be manually positioned. Modern prostheses are designed to maintain a natural appearance and remain inconspicuous when correctly implanted. It is noted that while the device addresses erectile function, it does not directly affect sexual desire or orgasm.
