Penn State enhances basketball and football rosters through transfers and retention strategy
Penn State basketball added Pennsylvania native Brant Byers, a three‑year player from Miami (Ohio) known for his shooting ability. Byers chose the Nittany Lions after a short portal process, citing the connection to his home state and the opportunity to contribute to coach Mike Rhoades' system. "Driving around campus has been crazy and awesome," Byers said, noting the personal significance of returning home.
In football, first‑year coach Matt Campbell emphasized a retention‑first philosophy even as he signed 40 players from the transfer portal, including 24 from Iowa State. Campbell plans to use the portal more judiciously while keeping a focus on developing and retaining players through their junior and senior years. He highlighted the retained 2025 roster core and outlined objectives for the 2026 team, aiming to blend new transfers with long‑term player development.
