Northwestern to debut new $850 million Ryan Field against Penn State

Northwestern University is set to host the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday, October 2, marking the official opening of the new, privately funded Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois. The stadium, which cost between $850 million and $875 million to construct, is noted as the most expensive college football stadium ever built.

Designed with a unique approach, the venue features a capacity of 35,000, a reduction from the previous stadium's 47,500. The design emphasizes intimacy and premium experiences, including a 360-degree canopy roof to trap crowd noise and a standing-only student section known as the ‘Wildcat Wall,’ modeled after European soccer supporter sections.

Northwestern head coach David Braun described the facility as “transformational for the football program and the university.” The game serves as a Big Ten home opener for the Wildcats, who enter the matchup with a 2-1 record, while Penn State enters with a 3-1 record following a recent loss to Wisconsin.
