Penn State researchers develop DNA-based electronic memristor
Researchers at Penn State University have developed an experimental electronic memory component, known as a memristor, using synthetic DNA combined with silver nanoparticles and a perovskite semiconductor.
Contrary to common misconceptions about encoding digital data directly into genetic sequences (A, C, G, and T), this technology uses short synthetic DNA strands as a structural scaffold and matrix. The DNA helps regulate charge and silver filaments within the device, rather than acting as a hard drive for files.
The resulting hybrid device operates at extremely low voltages—below 0.1 volts—and demonstrates a high resistance ratio between its on and off states, exceeding 100,000:1. This low power consumption could eventually benefit artificial intelligence applications and energy-efficient data centers, though the technology remains a laboratory prototype far from industrial scaling.
