Penn State study links daily avocado consumption to lower heart disease risk

A six-month randomized controlled trial, known as the Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial, has found that consuming one avocado daily may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study, led by researchers at Penn State and published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, involved 786 adults with abdominal obesity.

Participants in the intervention group added one avocado to their existing dietary habits without making other significant lifestyle or exercise changes. Results showed that the avocado group experienced a significant reduction in LDL particle concentrations, averaging a decrease of 49 nanomoles per liter. Researchers estimate this reduction could lower the risk of future heart disease by approximately 4%.

Crucially, the study noted that the benefits appeared to be independent of weight loss, as participants did not experience significant changes in weight or waist circumference. The research highlights the importance of measuring LDL particle counts rather than just standard LDL cholesterol levels, as a higher number of particles can increase the likelihood of plaque buildup in artery walls.
