Trump Administration Proposes Renaming New York Penn Station

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sent a letter to Senate leaders listing the renaming of New York’s Penn Station as an administration priority. The proposal is tied to an $8 billion overhaul of the historic hub and to the release of federal funding for the Gateway rail tunnel project that links Penn Station to New Jersey. Duffy hinted at the name “Trump Station,” saying, “I imagine you’re asking, ‘Is this going to be Trump Station?’ I think that has a nice ring to it.” Trump’s spokesperson replied, “Why not?” The president later said the idea was suggested by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, not by him.

Democratic leaders, including Schumer and Rep. Jerry Nadler, have condemned the plan as a vanity project, arguing that the Department of Transportation has no authority to rename a federal facility and that the focus should be on rebuilding the station for the millions of daily commuters. The debate comes as the administration also seeks to rename Washington’s Dulles Airport after Trump and follows a recent renaming of Florida’s Palm Beach Airport to the President Donald J Trump International Airport.
