PennDOT launches student challenge to prevent bridge strikes

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has launched its tenth annual Innovations Challenge, inviting high school students across the state to develop solutions for preventing tall vehicles from striking low-clearance bridges and tunnels.

Recent data shows that drivers have struck more than 600 state bridges in recent years. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll noted that these strikes are costly, time-consuming, and pose significant safety hazards to travelers. Even minor collisions can result in lane closures, traffic delays, and expensive repairs that disrupt local businesses and emergency services.

Student teams in grades nine through twelve must submit their proposals by January 29, 2027. Regional winners will present their ideas to Secretary Carroll and a panel of judges. PennDOT is collaborating with state engineering and transportation organizations to provide cash prizes to the winning team.
