Pennsylvania authorities respond to rising copper wire thefts

Authorities in Pennsylvania are addressing a rise in copper wire thefts affecting telecommunications and public infrastructure. In Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania State Police are investigating recent thefts in Cass and Rush Townships. In one Rush Township incident, approximately 200 feet of Verizon copper wire valued at $1,100 was stolen. This follows several other reported thefts in the county throughout 2026, including incidents at an electrical substation and from electrical suppliers.

In Philadelphia, city leaders are launching a coordinated crackdown on copper theft that has impacted recreation centers, parks, and public facilities. Officials report that the thefts have compromised public safety and cost taxpayers millions of dollars. To mitigate future incidents, the city plans to install anti-theft hardware, replace copper with less valuable aluminum cabling, and relocate wiring to higher, less accessible positions on utility poles. Additionally, the Streets Department is working on software upgrades to provide real-time alerts regarding unauthorized access to utility cabinets.
