Pennsylvania Boosts Funding for 988 Suicide Lifeline and Rape Crisis Centers

Pennsylvania’s 2026‑27 budget earmarks $10 million for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and an additional $5 million to preserve walk‑in behavioral‑health stabilization centers. The new 988 allocation will double the number of state centers handling text and chat contacts from three to six and support continuous operations at all 988 sites, enabling smoother “warm handoffs” from 911 operators to crisis specialists. Governor Josh Shapiro said, “We’re treating mental health with just as much care as physical health,” while Department of Human Services Secretary Val Arkoosh highlighted the goal of rapid, less‑restrictive treatment.

The budget also nearly doubles state support for Pennsylvania’s 47 rape‑crisis centers, adding $12 million to bring total annual funding to just over $24 million. Advocates praised the increase, with Shapiro noting, “These people are true public servants… they deserve more, and they got it.” The additional resources are intended to restore staff, expand services such as 24/7 hotlines, counseling, education, and housing, and address years of under‑funding.

Overall, the funding package continues a broader effort to expand mental‑health services in schools and communities across the Commonwealth.
