Pennsylvania businesses ordered to remove skill-game machines by Oct. 14

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has issued guidance requiring businesses to remove so-called skill-game machines by October 14. This directive follows a June ruling by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court which determined these devices are slot machines under the state Gaming Act.

Under current state law, such machines are prohibited outside of licensed casinos or licensed truck stops. If businesses do not comply by the deadline, law enforcement agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police, may take action. Potential enforcement measures include the seizure and forfeiture of the machines, related equipment, and any money connected to their operation. Criminal charges may also be filed.

The Attorney General’s Office clarified that simply unplugging or disabling the machines will not satisfy the requirement. The warning extends to distributors, vendors, and manufacturers who refuse to remove the devices from business premises, noting they could also face criminal charges.
