Elijah Hemingway charged in fatal stabbing of Pittsburgh pediatrician

Elijah Hemingway, 32, has been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of Dr. Idris Evans and the critical injury of his wife during a home invasion in Edgewood, Pennsylvania. Dr. Evans, 46, was the medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The attack occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, while the couple was sleeping. The suspect allegedly entered the home wearing only underwear and used a kitchen knife to attack the victims. The couple’s children, ages 8 and 12, were able to flee the house uninjured.

Investigations revealed that Hemingway allegedly committed a separate sexual assault and robbery in Wilkinsburg just hours before the homicide. In that incident, he reportedly ambushed a woman and stole her cellphone, which was later recovered by detectives.

Court records indicate a history of legal issues for Hemingway, including four restraining orders sought by women over the past decade. Previous proceedings described him as exhibiting aggressive and uncontrollable behavior. Hemingway faces multiple charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, and burglary.
