Pennsylvania faces measles outbreak with four deaths in four weeks
Pennsylvania is experiencing a significant measles outbreak, recording four measles-associated deaths within a four-week period in 2026. This represents the highest number of such deaths in a single U.S. state since 1992. The Department of Health has reported 731 confirmed cases across 38 counties and 141 hospitalizations.
The deaths involve diverse medical histories, including infants too young for the MMR vaccine and older individuals. This has led to a dispute between state and federal authorities. Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Debra L. Bogen has requested that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) transparently acknowledge these four deaths in its public dashboard.
Pennsylvania has threatened to withdraw its request for assistance through the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service/Epi-Aid program if the agency does not accurately reflect the deaths. In response to the outbreak, the state has expanded its immunization efforts, administering thousands of MMR doses through mobile clinics and other channels.
