Pennsylvania farmers face uncertainty as diesel prices hit record highs
Farmers in Pennsylvania are facing significant economic uncertainty as diesel fuel prices hit a record high of nearly $6.61 per gallon. This surge has drastically increased operational costs; for example, large farm equipment that cost between $70 and $80 per hour to operate last year now costs between $180 and $200 per hour.
Tommy Nagle, President of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, noted that the price hike threatens the viability of many family farms. The current diesel price represents a 60% increase compared to approximately $3.98 per gallon a year ago. Additionally, unleaded gasoline prices in the state have risen about 38% over the previous year.
The impact extends beyond agriculture into the broader transportation sector. Rebecca Oyler, President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, reported that some small trucking companies have already gone out of business due to tight margins caused by the fuel price surge.
