Pennsylvania hospitality industry faces losses after skill game ban

Pennsylvania's hospitality industry is facing significant financial strain following a state Supreme Court ruling that classified skill game terminals as unregulated casino gaming. The decision, which rendered tens of thousands of machines illegal as of mid-October, has led to the swift removal of an estimated 70,000 devices from bars, taverns, and restaurants across the state.

According to the Independent Fiscal Office, these machines collectively generated more than $1 billion annually, with each unit estimated to produce approximately $47,000 per year. Business owners report that the loss of this revenue, coupled with rising labor and goods costs, threatens their ability to remain operational. State Senator Gene Yaw noted that between 30,000 and 40,000 people in Pennsylvania could be directly affected by job losses or reduced hours due to the ban.

Governor Josh Shapiro has expressed support for the regulation and taxation of these terminals but noted that the Republican-led Senate has yet to bring a relevant bill to a vote. Currently, the Pennsylvania State Police are working with venues to enforce the court's order. While Shapiro indicated he would review any legislative proposals, the immediate impact remains a loss of income for many small businesses.
