United States faces severe measles outbreak with rising deaths

The United States is experiencing its most significant measles outbreak in over three decades. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed three deaths nationwide this year, while a particularly severe outbreak in Pennsylvania has reported five deaths and one under review out of approximately 1,300 cases. Pennsylvania health officials have also issued a rare clinical alert regarding congenital measles.

Nationwide, more than 4,400 measles cases have been confirmed this year. Data indicates that 98% of those infected were not fully vaccinated. Experts attribute the resurgence to declining vaccination rates and shifts in immunization policies, including the fragmentation of the traditional MMR vaccine.

This surge has raised international health concerns, particularly in Brazil, where authorities are monitoring imported cases to maintain the country’s status as an area free of endemic transmission. In Michigan, health officials confirmed three cases in Delta County, marking the first local cases since 1989.
