Pennsylvania Launches $41 Million Rail Freight Grant Program as FY2027 Budget Passes

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a $41 million Rail Transportation Assistance Program and Rail Freight Assistance Program, opening applications on Aug. 3 for projects that maintain, improve or expand the state’s freight rail network. Funded through state capital‑budget bonds and the Multimodal Transportation Fund, the grants aim to support businesses that rely on rail freight, a sector that includes more than 5,500 miles of track and 65 operating railroads.

In the same week, the Pennsylvania General Assembly approved the FY 2027 budget, a $50.8 billion plan that trims roughly $3 billion from the governor’s original proposal. The budget preserves the state’s rainy‑day fund, adds $136 million for the School District of Philadelphia, but does not allocate new money for mass‑transit, minimum‑wage increases, or affordable‑housing programs. Governor Josh Shapiro praised the bipartisan effort, emphasizing continued investment in infrastructure and education to sustain economic growth.
