Pennsylvania lawmakers: 48 former legislators now registered as lobbyists

An analysis by Spotlight PA reveals that at least 48 former members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly are currently registered as lobbyists. These individuals, ranging from rank-and-file members to former high-ranking legislative leaders, are working to influence the very policies they once helped shape.

Many of these former lawmakers represent prominent industries that they previously oversaw through legislation. While critics and good-government groups argue that this practice allows former officials to leverage public-funded relationships for private profit, the former legislators defend the role. They contend that petitioning the government is a protected First Amendment right and that their experience provides valuable expertise for navigating the legislative process.

Despite bipartisan interest in tightening regulations regarding lawmakers transitioning into lobbying roles, no new proposals have advanced past committee assignments during the current legislative session in Pennsylvania.
