Pennsylvania has reported its first two measles deaths in 35 years, involving two unvaccinated individuals in Lancaster County. These fatalities mark the first measles-related deaths recorded in the United States so far in 2026.

The state has confirmed 393 measles cases across 28 counties, with approximately half of those occurring in Lancaster County. This surge is part of a broader national trend, as the CDC reports 2,777 confirmed cases in the U.S. this year—the highest number since 1991.

The outbreak has sparked political tension between Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Shapiro has criticized Kennedy’s rhetoric, suggesting it negatively impacts public health and sows doubt regarding vaccine safety. This debate comes as national MMR vaccination coverage has dropped to 92.4 percent, falling below the 95 percent threshold required for herd immunity.
