A measles outbreak in Pennsylvania has led to a public dispute between Governor Josh Shapiro and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding two reported deaths in Lancaster County.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported the deaths as measles-associated, noting they are the first such deaths in the state in 35 years and the first in the U.S. in 2026. The state has recorded 393 measles cases so far this year.

However, Lancaster County Coroner Steve Diamantoni has contested the cause of death for one of the deceased, an infant. While the infant tested positive for measles antibodies, the autopsy indicated the cause of death was a ruptured or lacerated spleen rather than the virus.

Secretary Kennedy has accused state officials of fabricating or mischaracterizing the deaths for political purposes, calling the announcement premature. Governor Shapiro has criticized Kennedy for spreading vaccine misinformation, arguing that such rhetoric has real-world consequences for public health.
