Pennsylvania State Police launch new trooper hiring cycle

The Pennsylvania State Police have launched a new hiring cycle for state troopers, supported by $16.2 million in state funding. This budget allocation aims to train approximately 380 new cadets across four classes, contributing to Governor Josh Shapiro’s goal of adding 2,000 law enforcement officers to the state.

Following the elimination of college credit requirements in August 2023, the state has seen a significant rise in interest, with applications increasing by 69 percent in 2025 compared to 2022. Applicants must be at least 20 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED.

In a related development, Pennsylvania Western University has established an agreement allowing State Police Academy graduates to receive up to 12 academic credits toward criminal justice programs. This initiative is designed to support troopers seeking higher education for career advancement and leadership roles.
