Pennsylvania State University researchers to study tornado formation
Researchers at Pennsylvania State University have launched a three-year study to investigate how atmospheric turbulence influences the development of tornadoes within supercell thunderstorms. The project, funded by nearly $1.1 million from the US National Science Foundation (NSF), aims to improve short-term weather forecasting and the effectiveness of emergency warnings.
Led by Paul Markowski, head of the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, the research builds on 2024 simulations that utilized realistic turbulent environments rather than simplified models. These simulations suggested that tornadoes may form through mechanisms different from those previously identified. Recent field studies in Oklahoma have provided observational evidence of these turbulent structures, though scientists are still working to determine if they actively encourage tornado formation.
