Pennsylvania State University study: Strollers reduce jogging injury risk

A study published in the journal ‘PLOS One’ suggests that jogging with a stroller may significantly reduce the risk of overuse injuries compared to running without one. The research, led by Allison Altman-Single at Pennsylvania State University, analyzed 250 parents, finding that 19 percent of regular stroller joggers reported injuries, while 30 percent of the control group did.

On a per-mile basis, stroller runners recorded 0.19 injuries per 1,000 miles, more than twice as low as the 0.42 rate seen in the control group. Researchers attribute this protective effect to biomechanical factors: the pressure applied to the stroller handle helps transfer impact forces to the wheels, relieving the legs, and encourages a more consistent step frequency and tempo.

Despite the lower overall risk, the most common injury reported in both groups was plantar fasciitis. Researchers suggest this may be linked to post-pregnancy hormonal changes that increase connective tissue elasticity and vulnerability.
