Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to open Mon/Fayette Expressway sections

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has announced the opening of two new sections of the Mon/Fayette Expressway on November 20. This expansion extends the expressway’s northern terminus by approximately five miles, stretching from the Route 51 Interchange in Jefferson Hills to Camp Hollow Road in West Mifflin.

The project is part of a larger $1.3 billion long-term plan to extend the expressway north to Interstate 376 near Monroeville. While some later stages of the expansion currently lack funding, the commission has secured $163.5 million for the next phase. This upcoming phase involves a 1.5-mile stretch from West Mifflin to a new interchange on Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard in Dravosburg, with construction expected to conclude in late 2029.

Originally opened in 1977, the expressway has faced various funding challenges over the decades. PennDOT Secretary and Turnpike Commission Chair Mike Carroll stated that the expansion represents an investment in the region’s capacity to attract businesses and jobs, fulfilling a long-standing commitment to the Mon Valley.
