Penny Hardaway to invest $2.6 million in Memphis basketball roster

Memphis men's basketball coach Penny Hardaway has committed to raising or personally providing $2.6 million to bolster the program's Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) resources. The move aims to increase the Tigers' recruiting budget from $6.4 million to approximately $9 million to help the team compete for top talent and return to national prominence following a 13-19 season.

Athletic director Ed Scott clarified that the university will essentially front the $2.6 million as a loan, provided Hardaway can secure pledges to cover the amount by the end of the fiscal year. If the funds are not raised by June 2027, Hardaway will be responsible for covering the deficit. Scott noted that the arrangement does not violate current regulations, as the funds are intended to support the program's overall competitive standing rather than direct player payments for existing contracts.
