Germany pension reform: Coalition negotiates compromise on retirement rules

The German governing coalition, comprising the CDU/CSU and SPD, is negotiating a compromise regarding the reform of the pension system, specifically targeting the ‘Rente mit 63’ (pension after 45 years of contributions). Current discussions include increasing the required contribution period to 46 or 47 years, reducing the years credited for child-rearing, or limiting the benefit to specific physically demanding professions.

Critics, including VdK President Verena Bentele, have called for a ‘social check’ to ensure the reform does not unfairly impact those who have already planned their retirement. Meanwhile, a new retirement savings depot is scheduled to launch on January 1, 2027, offering state subsidies for contributors.

Legal developments also impact retirees, as recent court rulings from the Federal Court of Justice and the Higher Regional Court of Cologne have invalidated certain clauses used by insurers like Allianz and Zurich to unilaterally reduce pension factors.
