Pension eligibility and options in Hungary

In Hungary, several pension options exist for individuals who do not meet the standard 20-year service requirement for a full old-age pension.

Those with at least 15 years of service may qualify for a partial pension. If an individual has at least half of the required service time (7.5 years) but is denied a standard pension, they may apply for a discretionary pension. This application can only be made after a formal rejection of a standard pension claim. However, certain conditions, such as receiving other regular benefits or living in a residential institution, may disqualify an applicant from discretionary status.

For those who cannot meet these thresholds, the elderly allowance serves as a safety net for individuals who have reached retirement age but lack sufficient income for subsistence. Eligibility for this allowance is determined by age, family status, and household income per capita.

Additionally, divorced individuals may be eligible for a widow's pension if they received maintenance from the deceased until their death or if a court ordered maintenance. This temporary widow's pension lasts for one year and is calculated as 60 percent of the deceased's old-age pension. Long-term widow's pensions may be available under specific conditions, such as reaching retirement age or having dependent children.
