Pension reform proposed for North Macedonia capital investments

Nikola Memov, director of PIOM, has called for a reform of the pension system to allow second-pillar pension companies more freedom to invest in markets. Currently, over 300 million euros are directed into the second pillar, and while these funds can legally be invested in foreign exchanges, Memov suggests legislative changes to allow for domestic state capital investments.

Under this proposal, approximately 640,000 insured individuals could potentially become shareholders in state-owned enterprises like Chebren and Galishte. The state company MAPAS would be responsible for overseeing the placements of these funds.

The proposed methodology includes a tiered risk approach: younger insured persons would take on higher risks, middle-aged individuals would take on lower risks, and a third category of citizens would have no risk exposure.
