PensionBee warns savers of risks using AI for financial advice

Pension savers are being cautioned against relying solely on artificial intelligence for financial guidance due to the risk of making irreversible mistakes. Research from PensionBee suggests that while AI can be a useful tool, it may provide incomplete answers that omit crucial details, particularly regarding significant life events or when a user's location is not specified.

Becky O’Connor, head of pensions at PensionBee, noted that an AI response can contain correct information yet still leave a user with the wrong impression if vital context is missing. There is also a concern that AI may fail to recognize users in vulnerable financial circumstances who might use chatbots to avoid the costs of professional advice.

To mitigate these risks, experts recommend using AI alongside trusted sources such as MoneyHelper, GOV.UK, HMRC, or individual pension providers. Users are advised to provide clear context, including their age, pension type, and location, while ensuring they do not share sensitive personal data like passwords or account numbers with AI tools.
