Pensioners in Hungary and Romania are eligible for various forms of financial assistance to help manage living costs and utility expenses.

In Budapest, Hungary, municipal utility and heating support varies significantly by district. There is no single automatic subsidy for all retirees; instead, residents must check specific local programs. For example, the V. district offers periodic heating support between September and October, while the VI. district provides monthly assistance of 17,000 HUF for the period between November and April. In the XII. district, individuals aged 65 and older with monthly incomes below 146,700 HUF may receive 12,000 HUF per month, with applications opening in October.

In Romania, the government is providing a second installment of cash support to low-income pensioners in December 2026. This aid is targeted at those whose combined monthly income does not exceed 3,000 lei. The amount of the second installment depends on the income bracket: those earning up to 1,500 lei will receive 500 lei, those earning between 1,501 and 2,000 lei will receive 400 lei, and those earning between 2,001 and 3,000 lei will receive 300 lei. These payments are distributed automatically by regional and sectoral pension funds without the need for a formal application.
