Pensioners urged to check eligibility for financial support
Elderly residents in East Cambridgeshire are being urged to check their eligibility for Pension Credit, which can provide an average of £4,300 per year in additional support. The local council noted that this benefit can assist with day-to-day costs and heating as winter approaches. Eligible recipients may also qualify for the winter fuel payment, assistance with rent or council tax, and support for NHS services such as dental treatment and transport costs.
Experts warn that reaching the required age does not guarantee eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment. Other factors, such as residency and specific circumstances during the qualifying week, can affect whether a person receives the funds. Additionally, pensioners with a total income exceeding £35,000 may have their Winter Fuel Payment recovered by HMRC. While a partner's income is not included in this threshold calculation, recipients should be aware that the money may be reclaimed through the tax system.
