Pentagon and BAE Systems sign framework for APKWS guidance kits
The U.S. Department of Defense and BAE Systems have entered into a framework agreement to support the procurement of up to 25,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) guidance kits annually. The agreement could remain in effect for up to seven years.
APKWS kits convert unguided 2.75-inch rockets into laser-guided munitions. The system is utilized by all four branches of the U.S. military for air-to-ground, surface-to-surface, surface-to-air, and air-to-air engagements. It has also become a cost-effective alternative to air combat missiles for intercepting drones and low-flying cruise missiles.
The framework includes a pathway to increase production to 35,000 kits per year to meet demand from international allies through the Foreign Military Sales program. The agreement is subject to congressional authorization and funding, and the total potential cost has not been disclosed.
