Pentagon casualty counts for Iran war allegedly underreport US deaths
The Washington Post reports that the number of American military fatalities in the ongoing war with Iran is higher than what the Pentagon has publicly disclosed. Citing six U.S. officials familiar with internal Defense Department casualty data, the report indicates a discrepancy between internal records and the public Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) database.
Five of the officials stated that at least 22 military personnel have died, which is four more than the 18 fatalities currently listed in the DCAS database. A sixth official suggested the actual military death toll could be as high as 23 since the conflict began on February 28. Additionally, three U.S. contractors based in the region have reportedly died since combat operations commenced.
The discrepancy is attributed to certain deaths not being initially categorized as direct war losses, but rather as other operational incidents. The Pentagon has declined to comment on the accounting differences. This issue of transparency comes amid political pressure regarding the cost of the conflict, which has become a liability for the Trump administration ahead of the November midterm elections.
