Pentagon convenes Bergen Group in Poland to discuss NATO's future

The Pentagon is organizing a meeting in Poland for the Bergen Group, a working group focused on the future of NATO. Led by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby, the group includes Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

This initiative, which some observers suggest could be part of a ‘NATO 3.0’ concept, focuses on Northern Europe and nations deemed critical to defending against Russian pressure. For Poland, participation is viewed as an elevation to a group capable of co-creating security solutions rather than merely following major powers.

The selection of participants has raised questions regarding alliance unity, as major powers such as France and the United Kingdom, as well as the Baltic states, were not invited. While some analysts suggest the U.S. is recognizing Poland as a ‘model ally,’ others express concern that such a format could create a divided alliance.
