Pentagon creates Autonomous Warfare Command for AI and drones

The Pentagon has announced the creation of the Autonomous Warfare Command (AutoWarCom), a new military structure dedicated to the development and deployment of drones, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the command will be led by a four-star general and will possess authorities equivalent to a distinct military branch.

The initiative aims to accelerate the integration of unmanned systems into U.S. military operations, shifting away from a reliance on expensive, sophisticated platforms toward mass-produced, low-cost autonomous systems. This strategic shift is influenced by lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, where low-cost drones have proven highly effective. The command is expected to be fully operational by October 1, 2027.

This reorganization also follows a recent executive order from President Donald Trump that updates official terminology, replacing 'artificial intelligence' with 'superintelligence'. The move is seen as a critical step in maintaining technological parity and military advantage in the ongoing competition with China.
