Pentagon data breach exposes sensitive info of 3 million people
A major security breach at the Pentagon’s Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) has exposed the sensitive personal information of approximately 3 million individuals. According to U.S. defense officials, the breach affected 2.76 million living persons and 294,000 deceased individuals, including military personnel, civilian employees, contractors, and their families.
The unauthorized access occurred between October 2025 and July 2026. The compromised data includes Social Security numbers and details regarding the occupational specialties of service members. National security experts have raised concerns that such information could be used by foreign intelligence services to track U.S. military personnel or by cybercriminals for extortion.
The DMDC, which manages over 60 million personnel records, remediated the vulnerability immediately upon discovery in July. While the breach has raised significant counterintelligence concerns, defense officials stated they have found no evidence to date that the stolen information has been misused.
