Pentagon designates Confucius Institutes as national security threats

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has announced that the Pentagon has designated Confucius Institutes as a threat to national security. In a social media video, Hegseth characterized these Chinese-funded cultural centers as “sleeper organizations” that have continued to operate on American university campuses under different names and charters despite previous congressional restrictions.

Hegseth claimed that the Department of Defense identified 80 new propaganda cells operating across 30 universities. He alleged these entities aim to steal intellectual property and influence the minds of American students. According to the Secretary, the Pentagon has “systematically dismantled every single one of these organizations” over the past two months.

This move follows a 2020 designation by the U.S. Department of State, which classified the Confucius Institutes as a “foreign mission” of the People’s Republic of China. While Washington has long accused the centers of serving as propaganda tools for Beijing, Chinese officials have consistently denied these allegations, maintaining that the institutes facilitate language learning and cultural exchange.
