Pentagon evaluates reducing military presence in Persian Gulf
The Pentagon is conducting an early-stage analysis regarding a potential reduction of its military footprint in the Persian Gulf following sustained damage to US facilities from Iranian strikes. Reports indicate that more than 200 US facilities have been damaged or destroyed since the conflict began in February, including the loss of at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones.
While Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has not yet issued an official order for a strategic review, the Pentagon's policy office, the Joint Staff, and CENTCOM are involved in the assessment. The Department of Defense has suggested it may not rebuild damaged bases in their previous form, noting that reconstruction costs could exceed $5 billion.
Strategic options being considered include shifting troops westward to locations such as Jordan, Israel, or the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. Currently, CENTCOM maintains approximately 40,000 troops across nearly 20 installations spanning from Jordan to Oman.
