Pentagon faces budget cuts after $10 billion in funds remain unobligated

The Pentagon has obligated approximately $142 billion of a $152 billion defense package for the upcoming 2027 fiscal year. Because roughly 7 percent of the funds were not obligated by the October 1 deadline, approximately $10 billion is now subject to automatic sequestration.

This mandatory reduction of 8.3 percent effectively reduces the purchasing power for defense procurement by about $830 million. The original funding was intended for various modernization efforts, including the Golden Dome program, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, ammunition, and combat aircraft. While officials previously estimated that 95 percent of the funds would be covered by the end of the fiscal year, only 93 percent has been confirmed as obligated.
