Pentagon faces internal revolt and leak investigation over Middle East deployment
The Pentagon is facing internal turmoil following reports of a ‘general’s revolt’ and investigations into classified leaks. Four high-ranking US military commanders, including leaders from the European, Indo-Pacific, and Southern Commands, have formally expressed disagreement with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth regarding the decision to maintain over 50,000 troops in the Middle East.
These commanders warned that the prolonged deployment is unsustainable and compromises US military readiness in other regions. Leaked information indicates significant depletion of critical military assets, including Patriot, THAAD, and Tomahawk missile stocks, as well as the consumption of approximately one-quarter of the nation's MQ-9 Reaper drone fleet.
In response to media reports detailing these ammunition shortages, the Pentagon has launched an investigation. Approximately 50 members of the Joint Staff have undergone polygraph examinations to determine if classified data regarding munitions supplies was leaked to the press. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell characterized the leak as a ‘crime’ and ‘treason against the armed forces.’
Adding to the institutional instability, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned following months of internal conflict with Secretary Hegseth.
