Pentagon fires Stars and Stripes leadership over insubordination claims
The Pentagon has dismissed three senior leaders at the military news outlet Stars and Stripes, citing insubordination. The terminated individuals include Editor-in-Chief Erik Slavin, publisher Max Lederer, and Middle East reporter Lara Korte.
Erik Slavin indicated his dismissal followed an interview in which he discussed the importance of editorial independence and characterized government censorship as a 'red line.' Max Lederer, who had previously announced his retirement, stated that his leadership philosophy differed fundamentally from the direction intended by the Department of Defense.
The Department of Defense has expressed intentions to modernize the outlet's operations and refocus content away from what it described as 'woke distractions.' While the Pentagon manages the publication, Stars and Stripes has historically maintained editorial independence, with roughly 65 percent of its budget provided by taxpayers.
Navy Captain William Urban, recently appointed as deputy publisher, has issued an open letter emphasizing a commitment to high-quality, independent reporting, even as the recent leadership changes raise questions regarding the future autonomy of the publication.
