Pentagon investigates suspected cyberattacks on US military food supplies

The Pentagon is investigating suspected cyberattacks targeting refrigeration and food storage systems at US military bases. Researchers have logged outage reports at as many as 14 military commissaries, with at least six incidents confirmed to have occurred in late August.

At several installations, refrigeration systems malfunctioned overnight, causing temperatures to rise and spoiling large quantities of meat, dairy, and frozen goods. At Fort Huachuca in Arizona, officials reported on August 26 that freezers unexpectedly entered defrost mode, destroying stored food.

The investigation is coordinating with European authorities following a wave of similar cyberattacks targeting supermarket refrigeration systems across several countries. On November 2, more than 100 stores across Europe reported refrigeration failures, with incidents affecting Belgium, Ireland, Estonia, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Finland. In France, officials reported that 700 supermarkets lost refrigeration earlier this month. US Cyber Command is currently working to identify the perpetrators.
