Pentagon investigation links Minab school strike to AI overreliance
An internal Pentagon investigation has revealed that the February 28 strike on Shajarah Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, Iran, resulted from a series of preventable failures. The attack, which killed at least 123 children and over 150 people in total, was driven by outdated intelligence data and an overreliance on the Maven Smart System, an AI-powered targeting platform developed by Palantir.
According to officials involved in the review, the school was incorrectly cataloged as a military facility due to stale records. While the site had been a civilian school for nearly a decade, the intelligence database still identified it as an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps complex. The use of AI reportedly condensed the target selection process from hours to minutes, contributing to the error.
UN investigators have stated there are reasonable grounds to believe the strike constitutes a war crime. While Palantir maintains it is not responsible for underlying intelligence deficiencies, experts have questioned the actual precision of AI-driven military systems in high-stakes environments.
