US announces $400M loan for Australian scandium mine
The United States Department of Defense has announced a US$400 million conditional loan commitment to Sunrise Energy Metals to support the development of the Syerston Scandium Project in New South Wales, Australia.
As the world's first primary mine dedicated to scandium, the project aims to secure a Western supply chain for the critical mineral, which is essential for aerospace, defense, and clean energy technologies. Scandium is currently used as a byproduct in other mining operations, with China dominating approximately 80% of global production and nearly 100% of processing.
The funding is part of a broader strategic effort to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. Under the agreement, the U.S. will have a right of first offer on the facility's output. Additionally, Sunrise Energy Metals has already secured a deal to provide up to 25% of the mine's scandium production to Lockheed Martin during the first five years of operation.
